Zaha Hadid: The Opus

“The Opus” by Zaha Hadid

The queen of architecture (as one of our visitors dubbed her), is at it again. This time in the form of a commercial & retail development in the Business Bay district of Dubai (UAE), revealed on the 22nd of May, 2007, by Omniyat Properties and Zaha Hadid Architects.

Zaha’s signature deconstructivist design is obvious from all angles. The exterior has the shape of a cube, from which a big piece has been carved out; the opening goes all the way, through the core of the structure, until it reaches the other end of the building. It will create a sort of frame through which you will be able to appreciate Dubai’s skyline in an interesting way, she says.

As usual in Zaha’s buildings, the shapes of the interior spaces blur the line between structure and functionality. The ceilings, floors and walls’ shapes fluidly extend into usable seating, working and general living environments. The Interior, in a way, seems taken out of what I would call “a futuristic science fiction movie, like none we’ve ever seen before; perhaps one directed by Tim Burton? As usual, everywhere you see the clean lines that define Hadid’s indefinable shapes. This women doesn’t cease to amaze me.

Another amazing building designed by the great Zaha Hadid. I’m always awe-struck by the continuous lines that run through her projects and how she uses these gestural lines to create walls, spaces, and buildings.

Another amazing and complex project by Zaha Hadid. The way that she creates spaces between and within the contours is very successful.
